Unfair Choices

IMPORTANT EDIT

Since the Supreme Court of the United States invalidated Section 3 of DOMA on June 26, 2013, this choice does not have to be taken anymore. All married couples are now treated exactly the same under the US’s immigration laws, regardless of the spouses’ gender or sex! :w00t:

There's a minority inside the minority

I made this to illustrate the impact of DOMA (the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act”) on same-gender bi-national couples in which one of the partners is an American citizen or permanent resident, while the other isn't.

Not many people know about the plight of these couples.

Immigrant rights groups often don't want to be associated with us, because “these gays” are a controversial topic that might “hurt” the cause of immigrants.

Gay rights groups aren't too keen on being associated with us, because immigration is a controversial topic best not associated to the struggle for gay rights.

That is, of course, when these groups even know about the issue at all...

The result is that these tens of thousands of bi-national couples end up being the unfavored minority inside the minority, thrown under the bus at every occasion and being forced to face tough choices.

There are two things that could be done to change the situation: either repeal DOMA as President Obama has promised and failed to do so far, or pass the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA, H.R. 1024, S. 424) as a temporary solution.

We need help in this. We want to stop being the minority inside the minority.

We want to stop being “divisive issues” and “controversial topics”, and finally start being considered as human beings.

Here is a document showing all the ways currently available for immigration. (PDF file). Notice the rightmost column?

In case you were wondering, my current situation is:
  • Yes (being the non-american half of the couple)
  • Yes (oh so definitely)
  • Fourth solution (until another, more acceptable one becomes available)
